One tiger cat became five: the science behind Leopardus tilcayo
The tilcayo's discovery isn't a one-off — it's the headline of the biggest taxonomic shake-up among Neotropical cats in a century. Here's what changed, and why it matters.
Before 2026: one wide-ranging "species"
For decades, the small spotted cats of South and Central America known as tiger cats were treated as essentially one species — Leopardus tigrinus, the little spotted cat — stretching from Costa Rica through the Andes and across much of Brazil. “Tiger cats have been enigmatic for decades,” explains Eduardo Eizirik of Brazil's Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul: they were “once thought to be a single species based on their similar appearance.”
The genetic test that changed everything
An international team analyzed DNA from 38 individuals from multiple South American countries — including 8 museum specimens, some a century old. The verdict: the "single species" was actually at least five genetically distinct species, each with its own unique evolutionary history:

Why did it take so long?
Three reasons. Convergence: small spotted cats that hunt rodents in forest understory genuinely look alike. Rarity: tiger cats are elusive and hard to sample. Dead ends: without genetic markers from type specimens, nobody could prove the differences were real. Old museum skins — collected long before DNA sequencing — turned out to be the key that unlocked the puzzle.
Why the split matters for conservation
- Smaller ranges, bigger risk. Five species with restricted ranges are each far more vulnerable than one "widespread" species.
- The Red List must catch up. IUCN currently treats tiger cats as two Vulnerable species with declining populations; the new results have been submitted so all five lineages can be assessed separately.
- Funding follows species. A brand-new cat species — the first in over a century — puts a global spotlight on the Yungas and its conservation needs.
